Derby Dash at Cypress Keep!
A Florida Whips Event

Sunday, September 1, 2013

Get ready for the Florida State Fair Carriage Racing Derby competition in February 2014!  Come to the Derby clinic and Derby practical driving event at Cypress Keep to learn all about derbies and have fun driving them.  FEI has just approved derbies for competition, and the Canadian Driving Society, British Driving Society, and Scottish Driving Society has recognized derbies for many years.

What is a Derby?
A derby (British Spelling) or darby (Alternative non-British Spelling) (both pronounced darby) is a carriage racing event that combines all the excitement of cones, hazards, and other obstacles into a single timed competition. The driver will be asked to go through the course obstacles (such as cones, bridge, and hazards) in numerical order, and portions of the course will include hazards, with drivers going through in alphabetical gate order, and then proceeding through more obstacles. All obstacles must be driven in the correct direction (red flag on right).  The number of elements on the course shall be determined by the size of the arena available, not to exceed 4 lettered obstacles, one bridge, and 12 pairs of cones.
