What is the Little Everglades Country Fun Drive?

The Little Everglades Ranch is on 2000 acres of protected land that we will showcase on Sunday January 9th, 2011 with a continuous drive that uses all parts of the ranch. Flat hay fields, great driving clay roads, and shaded woods formed with lovely oaks form a beautiful setting to drive. Go through the truck scales get your turnout weighed! We will keep everything very wide and unassuming so beginners can just have a very successful outing and advanced drivers can do some fun miles and have a good relaxing drive. On the cross country drive watch for wildlife, such as endangered fox squirrels. South Creek Foxhounds are cooking lunch. Our charity is "Soldier's Angels" and we will have a donation box. We are looking forward to all you joining us and sharing the ranch with you.  Wash racks are plentiful, come play with us!!

ENTRY/RELEASE FORM  (requires Adobe Acrobat)

We will start the fun around 9 a.m.  Anyone driving in the morning will be volunteering on the challenges in the afternoon, and anyone driving in the afternoon will be volunteering on the challenges in the morning.  We actually need more volunteers than there are competitors!  There will be a long lunch break to allow everyone to eat tack/untack and switch from volunteer positions.

You can drive the course more than once (send in separate entries).  VSEs have a shorter course.

The course incorporate 10 challenges along the way.  Each challenge is scored with a possible ten points, and winners are determined by highest score out of 100 points:

  1. Silly and Serious Safety Check.  Bring whatever items you feel you need to be safe on your cross-country trek.  You will need to show these items to the safety judge, and justify your decisions about what to bring on your trip.  Half your points come from safety, and half your points come from creativity/humor.  (Hint:  The safety judge, Katie Carris, will accept "bribes" and she will take donations to Soldier's Angels!!!!!  Find out about Soldier's Angels and their needs by clicking here)
  2. Panda-monium Circles:  Be able to follow the lines to drive a 20 meter circle in both directions (left and right) by keeping your carriage wheels on either side of the guideline painted on the ground. Watch out for the Panda Bear that may make your equine deviate from the circle!
  3. Spell Check: All 12 dressage letters will be laid out in a pattern in the field, each with a wide circle drawn around it.  You will draw two cards that each has a 5-letter word on it.  You will have to drive to each letter in the field to correctly spell the two words you have chosen.  "Score" the letter by crossing any part of the circle around the letter.
  4. Hazard of Hay:  A simple hazard of entertaining hay rolls will allow you to go through gates in alphabetical order.  You will be driving the hazard "blind" and will not have the opportunity to walk it beforehand. There will be 5 gates (ABCDE). Speed counts, but no cantering!
  5. Achenbach Figure 8: Drive a figure eight one-handed around the cones. Start with 10 points as you go through the start/finish gate – each time you touch your reins you lose a point.
  6. Wait for Weight:  Drive onto the cattle scales, and have your equine stand still for several minutes to get weight taken (if you are driving alone, a volunteer header will be there to help you if needed).
  7. The Nautilus Spiral:  Drive a spiral, turn in the center, and drive the spiral back out.  Don't touch the borders if you get dizzy!!!  After the spiral is a cross-country portion of the course. VSEs have a cutoff.
  8. Boulevard: Be able to pitch a washer into a bucket – 1 point per bucket, 10 buckets. No stopping – a stop loses a point.
  9. Carefree Cones:  Go through a set of 10 cones without knocking down any balls as close to an optimum time as possible. You will be driving the cones "blind" and will not have the opportunity to walk it beforehand, but you will always be able to find the next numbered cone pair (even though John Porter designed the course).
  10. Time Trick: Finish your course as close to the predetermined pace time as possible.  What's the trick?  You don't know what the predetermined pace time is, or the exact distance of the course, although we are using an easy trot (slower than CDE times). If you are within one minute (below or above) the time, you get all ten points.  2 minutes is 9 points, 3 minutes is 8 points, etc. For 11 minutes and up away from the time, you don't get any points, but you can be as slow or fast as you want with no additional penalties, so just have fun on your drive!

Competition Rules:

  • For each Challenge, the competitor will carry a scorecard that will be filled in by the judge at each Challenge station. Don't lose your scorecard!
  • Competitors should, for safety reasons, carry a cell phone on the course.
  • There is NO CANTERING anywhere on the course - acceptable paces are walk and trot (and of course a halt!)
  • Competitors MUST call out their competitor number when approaching a challenge, and thank the volunteers when leaving the challenge.
