The following experience divisions are offered as either Single, Pair, Tandem or Fours:

  • Training (wire wheels and pneumatic tires acceptable at training only)
  • Training II (does Training marathon, but Preliminary dressage/cones)
  • Preliminary (must have successfully completed 2 ADS CDEs/HDTs/ADTs at Training)
  • Preliminary II (does Preliminary marathon, but Intermediate dressage/cones
  • Intermediate (must have successfully completed 3 ADS CDEs at Prelim)
  • Intermediate II (does Intermediate marathon, but Advanced dressage/cones)

The following equine sizes are offered:

  • VSE (under 99 centimeters) No navigator is required on the marathon for singles. No navigator needed on dressage/cones for singles.

  • Small Pony  No navigator is required on the marathon  for singles. No navigator needed on dressage/cones for singles.

  • Pony (120-148 cm (no shoes) - 149 cm (w/shoes))
  • Horse (150 cm and above, about 14H3")

Navigators may ride with one additional entry, only if schedule permits and navigator information is communicated on initial entry forms before the closing date. Driver may compete with a second entry at the discretion of the organizer, scheduling permitted.  Drivers may navigate for one other entry in a different division only if schedule permits and navigator information is communicated on entry form before the closing date. Multiple entries MUST be made before the closing date, or they will not be honored. People and equipment are limited to twice around the course.


Preliminary Championship Qualifications:

  1. Championship Athletes must be ADS members in good standing. 
  2. Preliminary Championships are open to any Athlete who has not completed more than one CDE above Preliminary Division (Driving Trials, Arena Trials and CAI 1* exempted) in the 24 months prior to the scheduled Championship. No athlete shall have competed at a World Championship in the last five years.
  3. Athletes must have successfully completed a minimum of three ADS-recognized CDEs or DTs in the Preliminary division. Completions at DTs above Preliminary will also be recognized for qualification. 
  4. Preliminary Championship Athletes are not eligible to enter the ADS North American Intermediate Championship in the same calendar year.
  5. An Athlete may enter only one turnout in the competition hosting an ADS North American Championship. The North American Championship entry, which includes the Athlete and groom(s) for Marathon and the Athlete for Cones, must compete before participating in the non-championship entry in Marathon and Cones. 
  6. Athletes will agree to a photo/video release.

Awards: Ribbons to 6th place per division. Special awards for best cones, best hazards, best dressage. Trophies for Preliminary Championship. 


Preliminary Championship Schedule:

  • Thursday afternoon:  Inspection Trot Up
  • Friday: Dressage
  • Saturday morning: Cones
  • Sunday: Marathon

Non Championship Schedule:

  • Friday:  Combined Tests and 100M dressage tests with cones.
  • Saturday:  Dressage/Cones for 80M dressage tests
  • Sunday: Marathon
