About Fred Merriam: Fred Merriam and his famous Morgan horse Gaitwood Lightwing, took the driving world by storm in 2002, and they were selected to represent the USA at the World Singles Championship in Conty, France, where they took an Individual Bronze Medal. The same year, Fred won the Fair Hill National USEA Championship and was named Horseman of the Year for driving. In 2003, the pair continued their winning streak with first places at Live Oak, Bromont, Blaineville, Laurels, and Fair Hill, and they were named the North American Single Driving Horse Champion. In 2004, Fred and Gaitwood Lightwing were selected to represent the USA at the World Singles Championship in Astorp, Sweden, where they won the entire cones phase over all international competitors. Fred repeated his North American Single Driving Horse Champion in 2004. In 2005 Fred began competing two preliminary horses, Chester, a half brother to Gaitwood Lightwing and Creedence, a 5-year-old Holsteiner. He continued to compete Gaitwood Lightwing at the FEI Level winning Sunshine State and Live Oak. With Gaitwood Lightwing he won Sunshine State and Live Oak again in 2006. He is now driving his new pair of preliminary horses, Spirit and Luthar, 5 and 6 year old Holsteiners. Fred Merriam has been an equine and driving trainer for the past 15 years, and has owned horses for most of his life. Fred was the driving trainer at Winchester Stables in VT from 1998-2006, then went to The Willey Farm in KY to manage their 41 horses. In 2010, Fred has returned to Florida to train and teach.
